When we think of a library, many ideas come to mind. We picture children discovering and learning, students studying for their final exams, people following their passions, or even using the library as a gathering place.
Regardless of the reason why people end up there, it’s clear that the library doesn’t just serve as one single function, but rather a series of core purposes. They connect communities. They foster knowledge. They help us share stories.
As Community Librarian at the Lillooet Library, Stephanie Witt is very familiar with the concept of storytelling and community engagement. After all, they are an important part of the Lillooet Area Library Association’s mission statement.
In pursuit of this mission, Stephanie has been working hard to make the library a welcoming hub for culture, learning and enjoyment. However, throughout the years, she’s noticed an unfortunate reality – that for many, the library can simply be a place of refuge.
“I noticed that a large percentage of our patrons are of very low income, and many are hungry” said Stephanie, whose kind-hearted, empathetic nature drives her to do as much as she can to support those in her community.
“I saw a need and wanted to help”, explained Stephanie. “In past I purchased gifts with my Air Miles, but then I ran out a few years ago and couldn’t do it anymore.” That is, until she heard about our Local Give campaign.
Equipped with her creativity and $100 from Interior Savings, Stephanie had the tools to continue her goal of spreading joy to those spending time at the library. She happily hid four gift cards – two to Buy-Low Foods and two to Subway – in DVDs and books that patrons had put on hold. This way, she was able to ensure they went to those who needed it most.
“I wanted to brighten their day and to let them know they are thought of,” said Stephanie. “Their faces lit up when they opened the DVDs! Food insecurity is a big issue around here, and I thought these gift cards could help them purchase food for themselves and their families. When I saw them during their next visit, they thanked me and told me how much they loved picking out their own food.”
When asked about her thoughts on Local Give, Stephanie indicated that she loves the idea, and has already spread the word. “I really think this shows what a credit union is capable of, versus any other type of financial institution,” said Stephanie. “Thank you for the opportunity to spread joy to my community!”
From all of us at Interior Savings, thank YOU, Stephanie, for your community dedication and for helping us to create a wave of local good!
